Description
It is a fish with an oval-shaped body, a large head and a slightly pointed snout with thick lips and small eyes. Of silver-grey colour, it is recognised by its blackish grey stripes.
It does not live in very deep waters. It prefers sandy or seaweed environments to rocky bottoms. It feeds on worms, molluscs and small crustaceans.
Its most common length is 15 to 30 cm, but it can reach lengths of 55 cm.
Its spawning season is in spring and summer.
It is captured with different gear: Fixed gillnets and trammel.
White fish with tasty meat, provides a high protein content. Due to its low content of carbohydrates and fats, its consumption is particularly suitable for low calorie diets.
