Description
It is a fish with a stout, elongated and cylindrical body. It has a sword-shaped snout that is long and flat. Black brown colour on the back and sides, progressively lightening to the belly.
It is a solitary fish, which lives in the open seas and can sometimes be found in coastal waters. It is usually found in depths between 0 and 550 m. It feeds mainly on fish, although crustaceans and squid are also part of their diet.
Its maximum length is 6 m, most commonly between 80 and 220 cm.
Its fishing season is from April to November.
It is captured with longline.
Its meat is highly appreciated.
