Description
It is a fish with a large head, scales and small eyes, and a very curved profile. Its colour varies greatly according to age, but it usually has a bluish grey back with silver sides, and small blue spots. Its belly is of a lighter colour and the fins are reddish.
It is a schooling fish, consisting of six to eight members, found on rocky bottoms, around depths of 200 meters. It feeds on blue fish, molluscs and cephalopods.
Its length is normally about 50 cm, but it can reach lengths of 1 m, and a maximum weight of 14 kg.
Its spawning season is between spring and summer.
It is captured with different gear: Dragnet, trammel and longline. At certain times of the year it is captured with fixed gillnets.
